Frequently Asked Questions:

I have never sung with a choir, but I love to sing…. is it true anyone can join? Is this something I can do?

Yes, anyone can join the chorus.  You do not need to know how to read sheet music or have any other singing experience.  YGS provides a safe, non-judgmental space for you to find your voice.  If you love to sing, you’re in!

How does it work? Do we pick one location and attend once/week?

Once you register for your “home” rehearsal, you are then welcome to attend any of the YGS rehearsals every week.  Some people choose to sing a few times a week or sing at different rehearsals to suit their shift work, travel plans, etc.  It’s all included in your registration.  Sing on in joy!

How do I register?  Should I mail in the registration or bring the form and fee on the first night of the choir?

There are 4 ways you can register for You Gotta Sing.  You can register online here on the website, before March 17, 2016 and mail a cheque to You Gotta Sing, PO Box 222, Lakeside, NS, B3T 1M6; or you can register online here and pay with debit or credit card using PayPal; or you can show up at your first rehearsal, fill out the registration form and pay with cash or cheque, made payable to You Gotta Sing.  You can also contact Vanessa directly about the Bursary option.

I was wondering if I could attend the first one to see what it was like before signing up for the whole session?

Absolutely!  Visitors are always welcome at choir!

I have a mobility disability.  Will I be able to get into rehearsal spaces?

Yes.  We choose rehearsal and concert venues that are as barrier-free as possible.  If you have a specific concern about accessibility, please contact Vanessa at 902-818-7702.

I’m not in a position to pay for choir at this time.  Is the YGS bursary an option for me?

Sure thing!  The YGS bursary can cover the full fee for you!  There is an unlimited number of bursaries to be given out to anyone in need.  And, singers can call on the bursary from season to season, anytime it is needed.

I notice that all of your rehearsal locations take place in churches.  Is YGS affiliated with any organized religion?

You Gotta Sing! Chorus is not affiliated with any particular religious or spiritual path.  I believe that “singing is our birthright” and by singing together, we create positive vibrations that contribute to a more harmonious world for all.  YGS sings both sacred and secular songs from a variety of traditions and sources.  Church spaces often have wonderful acoustics, availability for large groups to gather regularly, and are often supportive and encouraging of community initiatives that make a positive difference in our world.

How many sessions are offered throughout the year?

YGS Chorus is offered 2 seasons each year.  Our FALL season runs from September to January (17 weeks) and our SPRING season runs from February to June (17 weeks).

Are all groups singing the same music? ..and then get together for the concerts?

Yes!  All YGS Chorus groups learn the same music throughout a season.  We end each season with a celebratory concert and all singers are invited to sing together.  All YGS concerts are fundraisers for local or global causes and 100% of net profits are donated to our concert beneficiaries.  There are also YGS SINGS events offered throughout the year for community organizations, and singers can sign-up to sing at these events as well.  Performance is always optional for YGS members.

Do you ever work with kids?

Youth of any age are always welcome at choir and children 12 and under are free!  We offer many all ages Big Sing events throughout the year at public libraries, community gatherings, and concerts.
